Habana D.C.

One of my Christmas presents was Willy Chirino's Cubanísimo CD/DVD.
Here are the lyrics to one of my favorite songs, titled Habana D.C.

I'm sure I didn't do it justice, but the English translation is in the extended entry.

(Caserita no te acuestes a dormir…)

The other night I had dream, one of those that touch your heart
One of those that when you awaken, you want to turn it into a song
It was a moment of joy I carried with me for many days
And now listen to me because I want to tell you what I dreamt
Hold onto my hand to go on a great trip to Habana D.C.
My people were waking up from the horrible nightmare they had to live through
Little by little they returned, and you could once again hear those chants in the street
(Caserita no te acuestes a dormir…)
The lines no longer existed and the town could lift their voices, oh, oh
There was an end to the government stores, or someone who’d sell themselves for some panty hose, no, no, no
And a bearded one was the first to stick a sickle through his rear.
I saw a McDonald’s in the Paseo de Prado and in Belascoaín a Burger King
I saw a Sedano’s on la calle Galiano and in San Rafael a Taco Bell
And on La Lisa I ate a pizza from Pizza Hut
I went to the interior on a car from Metro Ford
I gazed at the waves from the Malecón drinking a Pepsi Cola
And in Yaguajay I saw a Miller Lite brewery, there’s nothing like it.
Virgins from Regla and Charity, bring Cuba it’s liberty soon.

Santa was here

Hi, everyone. We hope you had a lovely holiday!

Here's a quick synopsis of our Christmas:

Here's our little tree, with a big pile of presents underneath.

Here's Brandon opening a cool Dolphins lunch bag filled with goodies Tio Val and Titi Maggie got him.

dolphins Bag.jpg

He received his very first Thomas the Train rail set. I think this was his favorite present, and he absolutely loved when the train arrived at the station and "steamed".

And here he is concentrating as he plays with his Leappad (last year's present from Tio and Titi) and his new Thomas the Train cartridge.

That's just the beginning of all the wonderful gifts Brandon received. Though his favorites are anything Thomas, he loved everything he got from "Santa"!

Silly Christmas Questionnaire

As seen at Dana's:

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Depends, if it's Cuban egg nog, called Crema de Vie, then that. If not, Hot Chocolate

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? Santa wraps presents, of course! No sense of anticipation for the little one without wrapping.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White, I like the color to come from the rest of the decor: ornaments, candles, candies.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? No, but I have a "kissing ball" I bought from Crate and Barrel a couple of years ago.

5. When do you put your decorations up? Usually try to put them up Thanksgiving weekend, or the first weekend in December, but studying, papers, and finals delayed the process this year and we didn't get around to until last weekend.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Val's lechon asado

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? My brother and sister and I opening our presents, then pretty much playing with them all day long.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I don't remember how, but I think it was around 10 or so.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Yes, I open gifts as soon as I get them!

10. What kind of cookies does Santa get set out for him? This will be the first year we leave cookies for Santa, so it will probably be chocolate chip, unless I gather the courage to bake again and make some sugar cookies.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it? I love it, it's so pretty! (unless I live near it, then I imagine I'd have to shovel it, and that I don't want to do.)

12. Can you ice skate? Nope, never tried.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift as a child? I think it was my bike.

14. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? spending time with family.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert? I love pretty much all I really have to choose?!?

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? House-hopping

17. What tops your tree? A rustic metal star I got at Target last year. Very country!

18. Which do you prefer Giving or Receiving? Both

19. What is your favorite Christmas Carol? Harry Connick Jr's "Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers"

20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum? YUM!

Just call me Betty Crocker!

Those of you that know me know that I am not a big fan of the culinary arts.
That being said, I wanted to share with you all what I made tonight, thanks to my friend CalTechGirl and her favorite birthday dessert. I know it looks a bit messy, I'll be working on the asthetics next time.

Papito (UPDATED)

My grandfather, Brandon's Papito, had an accident this morning.
He is arriving at the hospital now to get checked out, so I'll update as soon as we know something.

Abuelo is okay, some fractures in his foot from getting it run over. More at Babalu.

Holiday Fun

Though we haven't yet decorated the house, we are completely immersed in the Christmas spirit. We spent the day at the mall, where Brandon talked with Santa for a bit, rode a train in the Christmas Village, saw a HUGE model train set, and saw his first "snow" fall. Between all that we did a little shopping.

Here are some of the day's highlights:

Brandon asked Santa to bring him a new "little Thomas" because he lost his die-cast one during our trip to Orlando last weekend. He's holding his "big Thomas", to show Santa which one it isn't.

Brandon was very excited to see this train, and asked for a few more rides during our visit to the mall. This is the first time he rides all by himself.
Sorry the picture isn't very clear, it was the best one of all the ones I took. I looked like a maniac, trying to run ahead of the train to get some good images.

Then we saw this absolutely wonderful model train set, which included everything from a carnival to an airport, even a drive-in restaurant with classic cars and everything. You can't really appreciate the intricate details of it in these pictures, but you can see how big it is. It took up almost the entire courtyard of that part of the mall.

Lastly, we made a pit stop at another mall on the way home because I had to return something, and we were just in time for their daily snowfall. This was Brandon's first, he had no idea whether to be delighted or scared. Turns out he loved it. I can't wait to someday show him real snow.

That's it for now. Little boy had a wonderfully exhausting day, and is already in bed. I think that's where I'm headed pretty soon too.
Good night!

Get well soon

Andrew was taken to the hospital today. His mom took him to the doctor because he had a high fever of 104, and they found that his white blood cell count was low. He's been in the ER all day long, getting a room just about an hour ago. He was given antibiotics, which has reduced the fever. He was at 99.7 or so when we went to see him at about 7:30 this evening.
The doctors ran all sorts of tests, and all has turned up negative so far. He needs to stay in the hospital for 48 hours because of his age (he'll be one month on Sunday) for more observation.

Please keep him in your prayers and hope that this is just a mild infection and nothing more serious...I hate seeing little ones in hospitals. I lived it with Brandon when he was born. I know it's for his own good, but it just breaks my heart.
