Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death

Being as how this blog is about a 3-year-old, I try to keep things around here fun and carefree, usually posting jokes, memes, and stories about our favorite little guy. However, today is a day that I will break that pattern for a very important cause.
Guillermo Fariñas Hernandez has been on a hungry strike since January 31st. That's 56 days without food or water. His cause? Access to the internet. Sounds simple, right? Not in castro's Cuba. This man is close to death for something so seemingly easy as access to the information superhighway, all because KaSStro (As my buddies CB and KillCastro like to call him) denies his people the truth about the world around them.

Support the cause. Help get the word out on the plight of Dr. Fariñas and the rest of the Cuban people. Link. Talk. Email. Write. Tell everyone you know about this. The truth shall set them free.

Green Thumb

After a celebratory lunch at my grandmother's house in honor of my mom's birthday, Brandon and I went by my best friend Ralf's house. He recently returned home after studying abroad for about six years (aka VERY LONG TIME) in Costa Rica. Ralf and his father were outside cleaning up the backyard and gardening when we arrived, and Brandon took it upon himself to help out. Here are a few shots of the little boy with the green thumb! =)

Felicidades!!

To my mom, on her 40+-some birthday (Val didn't say, so I won't either). Thank you for being a wonderful mother and an extraordinary grandmother. Thank you for the life you have given us, and the example you have set. Thank you for raising us as you did, being strict enough to keep us out of trouble, but allowing us enough freedom for us to learn on our own.

Have a great day, mami. We love you. Happy birthday!

The Fair, Be There

For as long as I can remember, I have looked forward to last two weeks in March. That is when the Miami-Dade County Fair comes to town for a bit. It used to be called the Dade County Youth Fair, this was before our county changed it's name, and I suppose when the organizers realized it's not just "youths" that attend (or "yuts" as Joe Pesci says in "My Cousin Vinny"). The rides arrive at the grounds in early February, and for a little over a month, the anticipation mounts until the second Thursday in March, when the first day of the fair is finally here.
With the exception of 2003, during which our favorite little guy was just two-and-a-half months old, Brandon has gone to the fair every year of his young life. The first year consisted of simply walking around. As we'd walk past the rides, he'd imitate the screaming victims...er, I mean riders. Last year, it was all about the food. This year, however, was most exciting since there were many firsts. Kiddie Land was the main stop, where Brandon and Rebeka taught us a thing or two about driving. Then off they went to the Super Slide with their daddies. I shared a mid-afternoon snack with the little man, his first Icee, and he was all smiles when we took a walking break. As if all that wasn't enough, the kids also enjoyed their very first concert! To our surprise, Freestyle greats Cynthia, Erotic Exotic, George Lamond, and TKA were in concert this evening at the Fair, and Brandon, Rebeka, Eric, Gonzo and I watched the last 20 minutes of it, enjoying most of the TKA performance. I absolutely LOVE freestyle music, so this was quite a treat! The kids were dancing up a storm, so I guess they have love it too. Heh.

BTW, I learned this evening that freestyle music is not popular everywhere, just an East Coast "thing", so if you don't know what I'm talking about...well, you're missing out. Freestyle is my kind of dance music!!

To recap: First fair rides, first Icee, first concert. Quite a busy day for our little guy!

Here are a few pictures of our new home. The kitchen, master bedroom, and dining room are still a mess, so those pictures will be posted at a later time.

Getting Settled

Bathrooms cleaned- check
Kitchen organized- check
Bedrooms set up- check
Clothes hung up- check
Laundry done- check
Computer set up- check

We still have a few odds and ends to organize, but for the most part, the new place is feeling like home. I couldn't take any pictures because my camera's battery was dead, and the charger was nowhere to be found until a few hours ago, but they will be posted sometime this week.

FINALLY!! (Updated)

It's official:

We own a new home!

We'll be cleaning the house a bit this evening, and unpacking throughout the weekend, so you won't hear much from us for another couple of days. I'm really excited, but too tired to show it. It's been a VERY LONG week...

In other exciting news, my nephew Tyler Christopher Corzo was born yesterday morning, son to my step-brother Luis and my cousin Sherri. He is absolutely precious, and the new family is doing wonderfully. I took a few pictures of him last night when we stopped by the hospital, and I will post one when the computer is set up, as well as a picture of our casita.

TTFN!

UPDATE:
Thank goodness for proud aunties! Here's a picture I received from my step-sis by email, he's a cutie, ain't he?!
