I confess: I am a band geek. I learned how to play violin in 8th grade and played clarinet throughout high school. All that time spent learning instruments and now, 15 years later, I can’t remember the difference between a Treble Clef and a Bass Clef. It’s a shame, really. I never bought either instrument, but perhaps if I had, I’d dust off the old violin and get some lessons to strengthen my very rusty skills. I’d much prefer learning by watching a DVD in the privacy of my home, rather than going to a private teacher or school and completely embarrassing myself.

My college roommate (in Rochester, NY) was a music education major. She had to become proficient on a number of instruments and then show her proficiency by teaching someone how to play a scale on each instrument. So I learned to play scales on many instruments in the two years we were roommates. violin included.
